Inspiration for this T-Shirt:
Background to healthcare issues: Since 1980, Canada’s corporate tax rate dropped from 36% to 15%, and the highest income earners’ income tax rate fell from 43% to 33%. Capital gains tax was 75%, now at 50%, contributing to declining tax revenues and impacting healthcare funding perceptions.
In 1998, Premiers gained a role in interpreting the Canada Health Act, linked to constitutional support. Initially, the federal share of Medicare was 35%, dropping to 22% today due to the expired Health Accord in 2014, allowing provinces to divert funds without accountability. The Liberal Federal government plans to impose accountability and conditions on Healthcare Transfers.
In 2020, the CPC voted for privatization. Under the Conservatives, Ontario underspent on healthcare, resulting in the lowest per capita spending and hospital beds in Canada, pushing for privatization.
Privatization won’t address the shortage of medical staff in Canada, creating a costly two-tier system that doesn’t deliver services faster.
Broken promises include Doug Ford’s pledge for OHIP-only payments, yet private services charge fees. Alberta’s privatization attempts in lab services and surgeries are problematic, with Quebec and Ontario planning to follow suit.
Conclusion: Private healthcare does not deliver faster service nor safer service. It costs more to both governments and you, with profits going to corporations.
