Politicians frequently turn to the endorsement of “common sense” as a rhetorical tactic. Rhetoric, in this context, refers to the craft of using language, especially in public speaking, to persuade. It involves the use of seemingly impressive but ultimately meaningless language. We’ve come to anticipate a certain level of entertainment in political discussions, leading us to dismiss a portion of rhetoric as a necessary means to energize the masses. When politicians lack a defined and easy-to-understand platform or when they seek to resonate with a more general, less informed audience, they often resort to platitudes. The term “common sense” carries an aura of simplicity and relatability, allowing politicians to appear attuned to the concerns of the common people. However, this approach can oversimplify intricate issues to the extent that they become unclear or, worse, disguise the absence of a concrete policy agenda.

Pay extra attention to empty rhetoric like “common sense”, “powerful paycheques”, and “the freest country on earth”. Demand that politicians like Pierre Poilievre explain what these promises mean and how they intend to fulfill them.

Many of the politicians who say that voting for them is a sign of “common sense” are simply conmen trying to flatter you.
